world Alzheimer's Day

September 21st of each year is World Alzheimer’s Day. Alzheimer’s disease is a common cause of dementia. Alzheimer’s disease is named after Dr Alois Alzhemer . Dr Alois Alzhemer noticed changes in the brain tissue of a woman who had died of an unusual mental illness. Her symptoms included memory loss, language problems, and unpredictable behavior. After she died, he examined her brain and found many abnormal clumps (amyloid plaques) and tangled bundles of fibers (neurofibrillary tangles). Plaques and tangles in the brain are two of the main features of Alzheimer’s disease. The third is the loss of connections between nerve cells (neurons) in the brain.1

Every 71 seconds, someone develops Alzheimer disease, it is estimated that about five million Americans and 30 million people worldwide suffer from Alzheimer disease. It affects about 10 percent of people ages 65 and up, and the prevalence doubles roughly every 10 years after age 65. Half of the population ages 85 and up may have Alzheimer disease.

Alzheimer is a slowly progressive disease of the brain that is characterized by impairment of memory and eventually by disturbances in reasoning, planning, language, and perception. It the results from an increase production of beta-amyloid protein in the brain that leads to nerve cell death. It is a progressive and irreversible disorder.

In Intermediate stage Patients become unable to learn and recall new information. Memory of remote events is reduced but not totally lost. disorientation to time and place is lost, Patients require the help for bathing, eating, dressing, toileting etc. Patients become irritable, anxious, self-centered, withdrawal from social situations. patients loose sense of time and place, unable to locate their own bedroom or bathroom, develop falling tendency, In late stage Patients cannot walk, incontinent. lastly they become dependent , loss of bowel and bladder control, becomes undernourished ,mute .
